The three different degrees of burns include:
- First degree burns are called superficial burns and damage only the outer layer of skin. The burn is red, painful and dry with no blisters. A mild sunburn is a first degree burn;
- Second degree burns are called partial thickness burns and involve both the outer layer of skin, and part of the dermis, or second layer of skin. The burn is red, painful, and involves blistering;
- Third degree burns are called full thickness burns and destroy the first and second layers of skin and may even damage the underlying bones, muscles, and tendons. The burn is white, leathery or charred. There is often no pain because the nerve endings in the tissue are destroyed by the burn.
